Gabrielle woke the next morning to the sound of labored breathing. She sat up, blinking and breathing rapidly. The room was dark, and she fumbled with the lamp at her bedside table, turning it on and looking over at Master Hyde.
He was asleep and his breathing was slow and ragged. His skin seemed pale, almost gray, and as she reached up to touch his sweat-sheened brow, she felt the heat of his fever before she even touched him.
âSir! Wake up, Sir,â she said, and when he didnât respond, she put a hand to his shoulder, gently shaking him. As he stirred, his features tightened and his mouth pulled back in a grimace of pain. When he opened his eyes, they did not focus on her.
âIs it morning? Whatâs happening?â
Gabrielle was wide awake, kneeling beside him now. She took his hand, which felt cold and clammy, and held it to her chest, pressing the back of his hand between her breasts.
âMaster Hyde, itâs me. Itâs Gabrielle. Iâm with you.â
He squeezed her hand, feebly, and he smiled, though she could still see his face lined with pain. âMiss Upton. You stayedâ¦â
She stroked his hot brow and then leaned down to kiss him there. âOf course I stayed.â
He closed his eyes and she felt him trying to rise.
âNo, Sir, you have to rest.â
He shook his head. âWe need to draw my blood. We need to test. We needââ He squeezed his eyes shut, tightly.
Gabrielle laid his hand down on his stomach and put hers over his heart. She could feel it beating rapidly. She scooped her phone up off the bedside table and saw that the time was five twenty-three a.m. âYou rest. I will be right back. I can draw your blood here.â When he didnât react, she asked, âOkay?â
He nodded. âI will waitâ¦â He spoke haltingly, through short, shaky breaths. âFor you. Thank you.â
Her stomach twisting up in knots, Gabrielle headed down to her lab, not bothering to dress. She took a syringe and measured out some of her serum and then grabbed everything else she needed before heading back up. She stopped in the bathroom briefly, to wet a facecloth, and then returned to him.
He looked as if he was sleeping again, and he didnât move until she set the beaker of serum down on her nightstand with a clank. She folded the cool, damp facecloth and placed it on his fevered brow, happy to see his taut features relax.
âIâm just going to draw a small amount of blood,â she said, and he nodded, turning his arm out. She held it steady and pushed the needle in through his ashen skin, drawing a few ccs of his blood. She capped the syringe, putting it carefully onto the nightstand and then took the beaker, turning and urging him to tilt his head forward and drink.
He shook his head, turning from the cup. âI canât. We need to testâ¦â
âYou need more. I have everything I need to test, and youâre not well.
